ABOUT TIM MOFFATT
Tim Moffatt is a Manager and Dealer with Minc Trading. Tim has expertise in both fundamental and technical analysis, with expertise in both the industrial and resources sectors.
Tim's investment philosophy is self diagnosed as ‘Active Investment’. Highlighted below:
- clients should have a core investment portfolio which should be traded around the edges to take advantages of market fluctuations,
- stocks should never be bought and held indefinitely – the world changes, a stocks characteristics change, today’s stars can become tomorrow’s dogs. Never fall in love with a stock,
- a portion of funds (depending on the clients risk tolerance) should include speculative or high risk stocks to try generate abnormal returns
Tim’s style is highlighted by the below characteristics:
- contrarian – focusing on situations that the market appears to have overlooked or overextended (to the upside or downside),
- value – a company’s price compared to its fundamental value is very important. Stocks <20% below their fair value are often ‘Buy’ candidates, while stocks >20% above their fair value are often considered ‘Sell’ candidates. Fair value is determined through a proprietary multiple based model that considers a stocks; growth, risk and value.
- technicals - used for identifying turning points, confirmation & divergence. Ignore charting (th at your peril
Tim's investing/trading philosophy is partially outlined by Ecinya Investment Rule #4:
“Research is to contemplate the possibility that, intuitively, you may not know the answers, and worse still, you may not even know the questions. Information insightfully interpreted will help avoid being caught in a position where you can lose a lot for reasons not understood.” (Ecinya is one of Tim’s previous employers, see: www.ecinya.com.au for further information).
